System Capability Analysis for 100% renewable generation and BESS replacement with conventional generation Planning and Operational Platte River Power Authority, Colorado USA
A transmission and distribution system of voltages range of 69kV to 345kV.
USA http://www.prpa.org/ 2019, 2020 Objectives/background/needs: Platte River’s Board of Directors had approved a goal of 100% renewable generation by year 2030. Platte River wants to test its system with 100% renewable penetration for its Integrated Resource Planning (IRP). Platte River would retire all of its existing fossil generation fleet and rely on solar, wind and batteries to meet its demand. Because renewable generation is intermittent, it is possible to have extended periods of no renewable generation, requiring Platte River to import power to meet its full demand.
Carried out load-flow simulations and determine whether the Platte River system will meet planning criteria in case it has to import all the power from neighboring systems if Platte River adopts 100% renewable power generation option. Simulations carried out for summer & winter peak, assuming no Platte River renewable or battery power generation and full reliance on imported power.
Determine how much maximum renewable generation and battery storage Platter River can add to its system, without requiring any upgrades.
Determine planning level cost estimates for the required upgrades.

Owned by Power GDF Suez, UK and Hubco International 84MW Hydro power project Pakistan http://www.Laraibenergy.com/ 2012 Objectives/background/needs: A previous generation connection assessment study of hydro power plant showed that stability criteria is not met due to less than required moment of inertia of the machines. Plant commissioning was delayed and developers tried all the possibilities to overcome but failed. Developers had reportedly showed losses in Millions of Dollars due to delays and other hardware changes they made already. Developers wanted POWER-tek to investigate and suggest solutions. Key deliverables and solution provided: Review previous reports, applicable Grid Code, and gaps in planning criteria. Perform stability studies as per Grid Code and National Transmission and Dispatch Company requirements including simulating SLGF/3phase fault and stuck breaker. Provided references and compared with planning criteria of other transmission companies – North America and comparable transmission companies, Suggestion on planning criteria improvement This hydro plant connection was not meeting the stability criteria. POWER-tek evaluated criteria and highlighted the gaps in criteria interpretation and performed the load flow and stability studies. Studies showed that plant meets the right interpretation of Grid code. Plant was commissioned successfully right after this report findings submission presentation.
