PowerTek Appointed to Lead Comprehensive T&D Master Plan for Major U.S. City Utility
As utilities across the United States navigate rapid shifts in energy demand, infrastructure modernization, and grid complexity, strategic planning has become more critical than ever. In response to these evolving challenges, PowerTek has been selected to develop a comprehensive Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Master Plan for a major U.S. city utility—marking another significant milestone in delivering high-impact power system solutions.
This engagement reflects the growing need for utilities to adopt a forward-looking, data-driven approach to grid planning. PowerTek’s role will encompass end-to-end system planning and analysis, supporting long-term strategic decision-making across technical, operational, and financial dimensions. A key component of the project includes evaluating PJM interconnection pathways versus potential network sale scenarios, ensuring that the utility can make informed decisions grounded in both engineering rigor and economic viability.
At the core of the master plan is a detailed assessment of the utility’s current and future system needs. PowerTek will develop 5-, 10-, and 20-year load forecasts, enabling the utility to anticipate demand growth and align infrastructure investments accordingly. These forecasts will be complemented by in-depth historical system analysis, providing critical insights into performance trends, operational constraints, and areas requiring optimization.
The technical scope of the project includes comprehensive power system studies such as load flow analysis, contingency evaluation, short-circuit analysis, protection coordination, and arc flash assessments. These studies are essential to ensuring system reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards. In parallel, PowerTek will conduct Distributed Energy Resource (DER) impact assessments to evaluate how increasing integration of renewables and decentralized generation will affect grid stability and performance.
Beyond technical analysis, the project also emphasizes resilience and operational preparedness. PowerTek will support the development of resiliency strategies and emergency operation plans, helping the utility strengthen its ability to respond to outages, extreme weather events, and evolving grid risks. This holistic approach ensures that the system is not only efficient but also robust and adaptable in the face of uncertainty.
In addition, the engagement includes comprehensive assessments of personnel, rates, outages, and technology systems—providing the utility with a complete view of its operational landscape. These insights will inform a prioritized capital improvement plan, complete with cost estimates and phased implementation timelines, enabling strategic investment and sustainable growth.
This project underscores PowerTek’s expertise in delivering integrated grid solutions that combine advanced engineering analysis with strategic planning. As utilities continue to transition toward more complex, dynamic energy systems, partnerships like this play a vital role in shaping the future of reliable, resilient, and efficient power infrastructure.
